One of the best decisions I've made in my cleaning routine was to begin making my own laundry detergent. Yes, it takes a little bit of time. However, it saves a lot of money and eliminates quite a bit of chemicals. I like that I can make a lot of laundry soap for very little money.
I usually make my laundry soap using Arm and Hammer Super Washing Soda (not baking soda), Borax, and a bar of Fels-Naptha or Zote. It's really simple and makes an easy to use powder that lasts a while. For my most recent batch of soap I decided to try the No-Grate Laundry Soap recipe from Pinterest. I already had some Dr. Bronner's castille soap and the other necessary ingredients available which made this an easy challenge. As you can see by the picture, I used a gallon ice cream bucket to mix and store the soap in.
This laundry soap called for the following:
1 - 1 gallon container
3 Tablespoons Borax
3 Tablespoons Super Washing Soda
2 Tablespoons Castille Soap
Pour 4 cups of boiling water into the mix, stir, and let cool. Then fill to the top with cool water. Use 1/2 - 1 cup per load of laundry.
If you don't have the Castille soap you can substitute it for Dawn dish soap. It will work just the same.
You do not have to be a scientist or Susie Homemaker in order to start making your own cleaning products at home. I did it, because I like the idea of eliminating a lot of chemicals and saving money. If you're afraid you'll miss the perfumed smell of clean laundry, you can add some essential oils to the load during the final rinse. I like lavender, because it smells great. You can pick the aroma that works for you. I've also heard of some people adding the Downy Unstoppables to their laundry soap mix. It won't take much.
Are you already making your own cleaning products? I'd love to hear what you use or what you are making. Leave a comment or send me an email at womaninthemancave@yahoo.com.
Best of luck!
